Expectations
What to Expect?

The answer to this question is simple – the best convention experience of your life! Over thirty active local host group members from all over Northern California, from Monterey Bay to Mount Shasta, are committed to make this a guarantee. Sonoma County’s coastline and abounding wine grape industry combine to make it one of the most popular tourist destinations on the Pacific coast. Those of us who live here regard its moderate Mediterranean climate as a paradise. An early advocate of this opinion was famed botanist, Luther Burbank, whose downtown Santa Rosa home and gardens are now a city park. (As a point of information, Burbank also kept an occasional purebred dairy goat and is listed in early AMGRA-ADGA publications.) There are rarely early rains in October; so expect the weather to be warm, sunny and balmy, but not hot, during the day. As the ocean is only twenty some miles west, evenings can be cool, and sometimes foggy. Sweaters and light jackets are always a good idea on the coast, even midday. The trouble with idyllic places is that they are often not cheap. Or as locals say, it costs money to life in paradise!

The Doubletree Hotel in Rohnert Park is a class act facility. The locked-in ADGA convention room rate is approximately fifty percent of its going rate. The facility has three levels of spacious, well appointed guest rooms and will give you a warm, giant chocolate chip cookie at check-in. There will be a breakfast buffet opening at 6 AM for all early risers. The in-house Bacchus restaurant and coffee shop serve lunch and full service dinners, with outdoor patio seating, weather permitting. An enclosed courtyard in the center of the complex features a large pool, hot tub and patio. Inside are numerous spacious lounge areas and a library sitting area with two computers for guest to use. It is surrounded by well groomed Mediterranean plantings, a golf course and tennis courts. Within convenient walking distance (i.e. without having to cross a major street or busy intersection), there is a convenience store, pizza parlor, sushi restaurant, elegant California nouvelle restaurant, and numerous small shops such as beauty saloons, gift shops, etc. Crossing only one busy street is a local watering hole featuring karaoke. Not within recommended walking distance and across the 101 Freeway are several restaurants, such as Chiles, Outback Steakhouse, In-and-Out Burger, a gigantic Wal-Mart and much, much more. The entire surrounding area is a gastronomic dream with almost every ethnic cuisine imaginable within five to fifteen minutes driving time. Doubletree features its own in-house espresso bar for the caffeine challenged. And of course, all around are the vines and wines of paradise!
